MACULAR DEGENERATION
Age-related macular degeneration is a leading cause of vision loss for older adults. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a condition that affects the macula, which allows you to see objects directly in front of you. As AMD progresses, it can lead to a gradual loss of central vision, making everyday tasks like reading, driving, and recognizing faces more challenging. AMD often develops slowly and without noticeable symptoms in its early stages. Some early signs may include blurred or wavy vision, dark or empty areas in your central vision, and difficulty seeing in low light.
Types of AMD
There are two main types of AMD:
- Dry AMD: This is the more common type, affecting about 90% of people with AMD. It occurs when the macula gets thinner with age and tiny clumps called drusen form. Dry AMD usually progresses slowly and gradually affects your vision.
- Wet AMD: This type is less common but can cause more rapid vision changes. It happens when new, abnormal blood vessels grow under the retina and leak fluid or blood. Wet AMD can lead to more noticeable and quicker vision loss.
Why eye exams are important
Regular eye exams are your best defense against AMD and other age-related eye conditions. Since AMD can advance without clear symptoms, routine check-ups allow your eye doctor to catch any potential issues before they become more serious. At Coastal Family Eyecare, Dr. Wilder can detect early signs of AMD during your comprehensive eye exam and develop a personalized treatment plan to protect your vision. We’ll schedule regular appointments to monitor your condition and adjust your treatment plan as needed.
If you are diagnosed with AMD, Dr. Wilder may suggest lifestyle changes, supplements, or eye injections depending on the type and severity. There’s no way to reverse vision loss already caused by AMD, but treatment can help slow its progression and prevent further damage. If you’re noticing vision changes or it’s been some time since your last exam, contact us today or schedule an appointment online.
