CATARACT DIAGNOSIS & MANAGEMENT
Cataracts occur when the natural lens in your eye becomes cloudy, making your vision blurry or dim. This happens gradually, and you might not notice the changes right away. Cataracts are a normal part of aging, but they can also occur due to eye injuries, certain medications, or genetic conditions.
You don’t always need surgery as soon as you’re diagnosed with cataracts. In fact, many people can temporarily manage them with an updated prescription for contact lenses or glasses or simple lifestyle changes, such as using brighter lights at home. Dr. Wilder at Coastal Family Eyecare will keep a close eye on how your cataracts are progressing and work with you to decide when surgery might be the best option.
When cataract surgery is necessary
If your cataracts start to interfere with your daily life and glasses or contacts don’t seem to help anymore, cataract surgery might be the best option. At this point, we’ll refer you to a trusted ophthalmologist who specializes in cataract surgery. Cataract surgery involves removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with a clear, artificial one.
After surgery, we’ll schedule follow-up appointments to monitor your recovery. Dr. Wilder will check on how your eye is healing and provide guidance on taking care of your eye as you get back to your normal routine. Cataract surgery, like other laser eye surgeries, is known to increase the risk of dry eye. We screen our patients for dry eye before their cataract consultation and during post-op.
